  The Woman in Black has all the key elements: the sombre rural landscapes and crawling mists for our doomed hero to wander through; the isolated, quite obviously haunted house, both 3/5. There are hundreds if not thousands of haunted house stories, many of which are worthy of inclusion on this book list. But I only had 10 slots to work with and even cheating and adding two bonus books didn't make the job any easier. I apologize to those who should have been included but weren't. Nevertheless, I am pleased with the list I have below and the theme that ties them together.

The Haunted Woman is a tense, atmospheric novel that questions the nature of reality. Isbel Loment is leading an ordinary, if uneventful, existence. She is engaged to a rather boring man and is just passing through her own life.
